Last week, Joe and I took a “day date” to Tonto National Forest. Located in scenic Carefree, Arizona (which totally lives up to the name), this “forest” isn’t much of an actual forest. I mean, can you really call it a forest with this scarce population of trees? Like, where is the forest?!
Regardless, the drive down into the valley where the actual National Forest begins is extremely scenic.
Seriously, we are talking absolutely gorgeous. For the middle of the desert, anyway. It’s a long drive, though – long enough for me to start getting antsy and need to get out of the car and walk around halfway there. But these picturesque views make it bearable. And when you actually get down far enough into the valley, down near Seven Springs, you would hardly know you’re in the middle of a barren desert wasteland (don’t let it fool you, you’re still in the middle of a barren desert wasteland).
Our primary purpose here was photography – both for my clothing group and for Joe’s Instagram, since he was looking for some new shots for his Gitchi Adventure Goods tees. We brought our dog along, since it had been a hot minute since he had gotten out of the house to explore. His name is Tripp, and he’s an 8 year old Corgi/Shepherd mix (at least that’s what they told us at the shelter. Honestly, who knows??). I think he enjoyed this adventure more than anyone else. Actually, I’m quite sure of it.
We did some hiking up the main trail, and by that I mean we walked leisurely along the gravel road because let’s face it, I was in sandals and a midi skirt, not hiking apparel. We stumbled upon a homemade fire ring, and walked along the river bed for a while. Well, it used to be a river bed, at least. Right now it’s totally dried up, and it probably won’t have any water running through it for at least another three to four months. It was so nice to get down into the valley and out of the heat of the desert – it was 110 degrees back home, but only 88 where we were in the National Forest. All in all, this was a fantastic spot for a little morning getaway, and I know we will be back in the near future!
