Alright, let’s face it. Everyone needs these 3 quick tips for looking put together when you’re actually exhausted. We’ve all been there – when you stayed out way too late last night knowing that it was probably a bad idea, but the bright lights and red wine got the best of you, and now you’re about to be running late for a work meeting. Or, as has been the case more recently, you binged on Netflix until 2 am because it was the only opportunity you were going to get to watch this new season of Kimmy Schmidt without your toddler climbing on your head. And there
definitely was may have still been red wine involved. But I’m here to let you know: it’s okay.
Here’s how to fix your hot mess self in a hurry.
But just, like, for the day. In the long run, less Kimmy Schmidt and more beauty rest is probably a better answer.
Here are my 3 Quick Tips for Looking Put Together, even when you’re dying a little bit on the inside.
1. Jewel tones.
This one may be tricky to pull off if you don’t have time to go home and throw on a new outfit (god forbid) before that work meeting (that you’re probably late for now). Got an emerald green scarf in your back seat leftover from St. Patrick’s Day? That’ll work. A pair of sapphire blue leggings to go with your black tunic and pumps? Perfection. Ditch the monochromatic look for a bright coral skirt instead. Jewel tones are having a serious moment in fashion right now, and this is one of those times that we would prefer to keep people’s attention on how on point your outfit is rather than how you’re still wearing last night’s eyeshadow.
2. Mascara, concealer, lips. ALWAYS.
In my beauty group, one of the questions I ask members when they’re joining is “if you could only have one makeup product in your purse, what would it be?”. But really, this is a trick question. You should always have the aforementioned three items on your person, without fail, in any situation. I know I am making this seem dramatic, but trust. They will not disappoint. Mascara, concealer, lips. “Why?”, you may ask? Well let me enlighten you.
Mascara is the one product you can apply to your eyes to make you instantly look more awake. I don’t care if you literally just crawled out of a gutter that you’ve been in for three days. Two coats of mascara and you will look halfway presentable. This may be an exaggeration, but you get where I’m going. Don’t spend three days in a gutter.
Concealer. Apply in a dabbing motion below the eyes, and then sweep up onto the very tops of the cheekbones. Blend. Not only with this cover up those tell-tale dark circles, but it draws the focus up and onto your cheeks and defines the face for a more youthful look. Bonus!
Finally, lips. I say “lips” because I don’t want to get too specific with which variety of lippy you choose to carry. I’m fine with anything from a gloss to a sheer lipstick to a tinted balm. Really, just go with what you feel on this one. It is impossible to leave your house with a good lippy on and not feel put together. Utterly impossible.
3. A piece of statement jewelry
I’m not even joking when I say that I drive around with a giant, bedazzled shield necklace in the center console of my car. You just never know, you guys. This one goes along with the same principle I was outlining up above, in number one. It doesn’t have to be a necklace, although necklaces are always my statement pieces of choice these days. Stacked bracelets or a really great pair of earrings will get the job done, too. Jewelry is a great way to fake your way into looking like you know what you’re doing, even if you’re not totally sure what day it is right now.
