The Maxi skirt is a timeless look, and it’s a piece that I’m sure we all have at least one of hanging in our closet at home. Not me, though. I have at least fifteen. No shame.
We love our Maxi skirts because they’re easy and airy while still keeping us covered and comfortable during the hottest months of summer. But this year, designers are kicking the Maxi look to the curb and replacing them with Midi skirts – a skirt with a hemline that falls between the knee and the ankle. Oscar de la Renta, Coach, and Tori Burch are just a few names who have added the Midi hemline to their pre-fall 2017 runway collections. Why? Because Midi is the new Maxi this year.
And here are five reasons why:
- Exposed elastic waistbands. They allow the skirt to be worn either at your natural waist (the “high-waisted” look) or lower on your hips. This also means you’re able to shop from a broader range of sizes, since you’ll want to size up or down depending on where on your body you plan to wear it.

- Lace and chiffon. These feminine fabrics are all over the runways this spring! In our skirts, the lining is cut about 4 inches shorter than the outer layer, creating visual interest and perfect draping on women of different body types.

- Accordion pleats. Our skirts feature hand-set mini pleats, which are having a major moment in fashion right now, and aren’t going anywhere any time soon. The delicate rose-skin fabric that lends itself perfectly to accordion pleats also helps with the on-trend feminine look. On the runways, Fendi, Dior, and Versace have all added accordion pleats to their looks this year. Who can blame them? Also called knife pleats, were seeing them all over in street style, too.

- Playful AND sophisticated – you CAN be both! Who knew? The Midi hemline falls between the knee and the ankle, making it the perfect look to go easily between daytime and date night. You don’t have to sacrifice chic for office-appropriate. At least, not in one of these bad boys. Add in the ability to play with different colorblocking, prints, and fabrics, and you have yourself a skirt that can take you to any occasion with ease.

- On-trend. If the rest of the information above hasn’t clued you in yet, the Midi look is an extremely fashion-forward look that will be everywhere very soon. Stay ahead of the curve and get your hands on one today!
